During the early goings of Tuesday night’s 72-32 lady Cougar victory over Lejeune, it appeared that Croatan might have had their fill of the essential compound over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
The lady Cougars got off to a slow start in the initial four minutes of their first contest after Thanksgiving break and were up only two points, 10-8.
But after 28 more minutes of game time and 62 more points later, the lady Cougars had knocked off any holiday meal sluggishness and cruised to a 40-point victory.
“I gave the girls Thanksgiving off,” said Croatan coach Steve Yount. “But we had a really hard practice Monday night. I actually thought that with the layoff we would be a little more ragged than we were, so I was pleased with that.”
While the lady Devilpups held on early, it wasn’t long before the lady Cougars started to pull away.
After drawing to within two, 10-8, on an Ashley Robinson free throw, the Devilpups were outscored 12-0 to end the first quarter down 22-8.
Croatan’s Chelsea McGowen had a huge part in the scoring run, netting eight straight during the four-minute span and ended the game with a double-double of 22 points, 12 rebounds, her third in as many games.
Robinson was the leading Lejeune scorer with 13 points, followed by Kristie Moss, who had eight.
Other than those two, the lady Cougar defense held stout for most of the game, causing a whopping 30 turnovers.
“One of the points we were trying to emphasize tonight,” said Yount, “was playing good defense without committing as many fouls as we had committed in our prior two games. I am not sure we accomplished that. I think we still committed too many fouls, but when you play an aggressive man-to-man defense, you are going to commit fouls. We are just trying to find that balance between being aggressive and where we commit unnecessary fouls.”
Croatan racked up its fair share of fouls with 24, but the lady Devilpups failed to take advantage.
Lejeune was a woeful 47 percent from the charity stripe, going 8-of-17.
“I told the girls that we needed to capitalize on Croatan’s mistakes to stay in the game,” said lady Devilpup coach Debbie Bryant. “So that is one of the big things we will be working on in practice over the next couple of days.”
One thing Croatan will not have to practice on will be rebounding as the lady Cougars racked up 45 boards in the game.
“I am not sure if we have ever hit 45 rebounds in one game,” said Yount. “That is just outstanding. But it means one of two things “ we either did a terrific job on the boards, or we missed an awful lot of shots. I think I am going to have to look at the other stats to decide which.”
In the second half as Croatan connected on layup after layup, many of the rebounds occurred on the defensive side for the lady Cougars.
With two minutes remaining in the quarter and most of the reserves on the lady Cougar bench already in the game, Croatan had built an impressive 38-14 lead.
But Lejeune battled back and ended the half on a six-point run to pull within 18 after two quarters.
“Lejeune battled tonight,” said Yount. “They gave us everything they had. Since our jayvees didn’t play, I dressed two players from the junior varsity, and both got to see the floor some and score. We are still in nonconference, so we are trying to figure out what is our best lineup. I started a big lineup tonight, and I was pleased with that group.”
One of those players, Ar’neka Montford, took over in the second half of the game.
Montford scored 11 of her 17 points in the third and fourth quarters to go along with her four steals, four assists and three rebounds.
Mimi Montford-Frost also had a strong performance for the lady Cougars with 10 points and seven rebounds.
When the pair of teams returned from the half, Croatan cruised.
The lady Cougars had a 52-28 lead after three periods and outscored Lejeune 20-4 in the fourth quarter to claim the lopsided victory.
“I thought the girls showed improvement over their last two games,” Bryant said. “That is what we are focusing on right now, and I thought we did that. We had eight active players tonight. One of our girls was out due to injury, and another was sick. We actually have 10 girls.”
With the loss, Lejeune fell to 0-3 on the young season, while Croatan improved to 3-0.
But this week is full of challenges for the lady Cougars as they play again tonight against White Oak at home before traveling to Topsail Friday for their third game of the week.
“This is the first of three games we play this week,” Yount remarked about his team’s upcoming schedule. “It is going to be a challenge for us, but I am thankful that the first two are going to be at home. We host White Oak here on Wednesday then travel to Topsail Friday. Then we turn right around and host West (Carteret) for a rematch Monday. That doesn’t leave us with a lot of time to work out some of the things I want to work out in practice. But we will watch some tapes and use that as practice and will have to pick out the points that we really need to emphasize.
“During the nonconference season, it is about fixing one problem at a time and get a little better each time you play. I thought today was better than last Tuesday’s game against East and am expecting tomorrow’s game to be better still.”
Tipoff for tonight’s game is set for 6 p.m.
